Chelsea suffered heartache in the Carabao Cup final as the Blues lost on penalties to Liverpool after an enthralling 120 minutes at Wembley.
Thomas Tuchel’s post-match press conference after Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool on penalties at Wembley.
The match itself was an enthralling encounter between two excellent sides. Chelsea had the better chances in the opening hour with Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount both spurning glorious opportunities.
Liverpool then thought they had broken the deadlock when Joel Matip headed home but VAR ruled Virgil van Dijk was offside in the build-up to the goal.
It was Chelsea’s turn to be denied soon after as Kai Havertz saw a header ruled out by the offside flag. So the final went into extra time.
During the additional 30 minutes, Romelu Lukaku saw a goal controversially chalked off by VAR and Havertz also had a strike ruled out – the German offside having converted a cross from Lukaku.
The game went to penalties and after every outfield player had scored, it came down to Caomihim Kelleher and Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was brought on specifically for the spot-kicks.
Unfortunately for Chelsea, Kelleher converted and Kepa then blazed his spot-kick well over the crossbar to ensure it was Liverpool who lifted the trophy.
