Pre-season is often a time when emerging youngsters at a football club are given the chance to impress the first team manager or head coach as they plot a pathway to senior football.
This time last year, the likes of goalkeeper Karlo Ziger, midfielder Lewis Bate and versatile Henry Lawrence were all included in pre-season training sessions by former manager Frank Lampard as they were given the chance to impress.
Since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, things have been a little different. With the German battling in three competitions having taken over from Lampard, he went with the senior players he had at his disposal.
It worked as well as Chelsea won the Champions League by beating Man City last month while also securing a top-four finish in the Premier League. The only disappointment came in the FA Cup final when the Blues were beaten by Leicester City at Wembley.
Speaking of impressing Tuchel during pre season, one player who will be Keen on that is Xavier Mbuyamba.
The central defender, signed from Barcelona last summer, had an interrupted first campaign with Chelsea as he suffered a long-term injury.
He returned to the Premier League 2 side in April and scored with his first touch, coming off the bench in a win over Southampton.
Mbuyamba was watched for a long time by the Blues before bringing him to the club and while a first team spot might be a tad too soon, he’s certainly got a chance to impress Tuchel in pre-season if he’s given the chance.
