Pep Guardiola and Man City have blinked first in the 2021/22 title race as they close in on a blockbuster move for the Aston Villa captain.

Beaten Champions League finalists Manchester City appear to be reacting to their loss to Chelsea in Portugal by splashing the cash in the transfer market.

Reports have emerged on Friday morning that Pep Guardiola’s side, who lost three times to Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea in the space of six weeks last season, are ready to obliterate the Premier League transfer record and spend an eye-watering £100million on Aston Villa talisman Jack Grealish after EURO 2020 comes to a close.

That would eclipse the previous record of £89million that rivals Man Utd paid to Juventus to bring Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford in 2016.

City cantered to the Premier League title last season and swept aside all comers in the League Cup but lost to Chelsea in the Champions League final and FA Cup semi final in 2020/21.

With rumours that Guardiola is set to launch a radical overhaul of his squad, City were linked heavily with moves for Grealish and also Harry Kane, who has told managerless Spurs he wants to leave.

Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez are reportedly on the chopping block at the Etihad as Guardiola plots another assault on the trophy that has eluded him in the north west – the Champions League.

That signals a change of Plans for Pep and his City entourage.

Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez are reportedly on the chopping block at the Etihad as Guardiola plots another assault on the trophy that has eluded him in the north west – the Champions League.

While they are one of the richest clubs on the planet, their transfer record currently stands at £64million for defender Ruben Dias. City have shown more of a propensity to be frugal with their wealth, spreading it across numerous signings rather than going for one superstar.

Now though, that tack appears to be changing with the move for Grealish and perhaps Kane as well to see off the threat of their rivals – Chelsea very much among them thanks to the resurgence in the 2021 under Tuchel.

The Blues have also been linked with moves for Grealish and Kane this summer but City are ready to flex their enormous financial muscle to take away two potential targets from the clutches of Tuchel and Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea are expected to mount a serious title challenge in 2021/22 and need reinforcements to do so, especially up front. Spurs sanctioning a move for Kane across London is about as unlikely as it gets.

Erling Haaland has been heavily linked with a massive £150million move to Stamford Bridge and while that is a deal the Blues would love to get done, especially Abramovich, it’s far from straightforward with Borussia Dortmund not looking to sell their superstar striker.

Chelsea’s transfer chief Marina Granovskaia, one of the shrewdest operators in the business will be launched into action and Abramovich will have to get his chequebook out in order for the Blues to compete with City if they do indeed acquire Grealish, with sources close to the Villa skipper believing a he will get his move.
